YAS News - Week 5, Term 4
A note from our Pastoral Care Worker
It has been some weeks since I last included anything in the newsletter. I think the idea of a continuous type of school magazine, where you can hop online, have a look, and keep to date is a great idea.
This week was my Pastoral Care Review. This happens every two years. I want to thank all the students, staff and families that took part in the surveys that were distributed, seeking your comments.
Your input was truly appreciated and has helped to enable me to further extend my tenure here at Yankalilla Area School. I'm thrilled to know that I will be able to continue in my role as Pastoral Care Worker. This is such a diverse and rewarding job, where I get to connect with the whole community in one way or another. You may find me squirting hand sanitiser in the mornings, supporting a 5-year-old who gets a bit anxious saying goodbye to Mum in the morning, assisting in a classroom, making an emergency cheese toasty for someone without a sandwich, or serving hot chocolate and toast at Breakfast Club.
If there is ever a time that you would like to stop in for a chat, please contact the Front office and I will follow up with you just as soon as I can.
BREAKFAST CLUB to recommence this Monday 15th November. After such a long break all our volunteers are looking forward to once again, seeing and serving the students hot chocolate, toast, and juice. We will be in the Home Ec room Mondays and Fridays between 8:15am and 8:45am.
All year levels are welcome and thanks to the generosity of our local community, there is no cost.

Thankyou, Yankalilla & District Lions Club
Yankalilla Area School would like to sincerely thank the Yankalilla & District Lions Club and the family of the late Brian Cain for donating money to the school to purchase an amplifier to be used as part of the schools Music program.
Brian Cain a member of the Yankalilla Lions Club volunteered at our school from 2016 – 2018 working with children twice a week as a mentor. His ability to engage with the students and form positive relationships with them usually through music or over a game of chess was excellent. He loved music and was a brilliant singer/guitarist/songwriter. His true talent for music and love of children was witnessed during the time he worked in our Junior Primary. It was during that time he worked with small groups of young children encouraging them to write songs which he would put to music. The children would perform their songs to their classes with Brian on guitar. It was a very popular part of the week and the students always looked forward to being chosen to work with Brian. He had to leave in 2016 as he developed cancer.
Brian was awarded the Yankalilla Area School Volunteer of the year in 2020. Brian was a very kind and caring gentleman who was quietly spoken until he burst into song with huge voice that made everyone smile and want to tap our feet to.
His memory now lives on through the schools music program.
Ipad Donation to YAS
The District Council of Yankalilla has presented an IPad to the School. The IPad was won by a Community Member as part of a competition organised through the Council.
The donor wishes to remain anonymous.
We would like to thank this kind person for their gift to school.
Fleurieu STEAM Expo
On Wednesday 3rd November, we had the Fleurieu STEAM Expo where our students displayed their learning and competed against other students from across the Fleurieu.
In the R-2 category we had:
- 1st- Ameia Knowles
- 2nd- Ella, Sophia and Evie
- 3rd- Queenie Hunt
3-4 Category
- 1st - Holly Wheaton
- 2nd- Otto, Riley, Blake and Noah
5-6 Category
- 3rd- Charlie, Oliver and AJ
A big congratulations to all students who participated and represented YAS. Thank you to all the teachers for supporting this learning and parents for transporting students to the event. Prizes and individual certificates will be given to the students over the coming weeks.
