YAS News - Week 7, Term 4

A note from the Principal

We are now in the ‘homeward stretch’ of the school year, with a number of events and activities happening across the school in these last weeks.

Week 9 events across the school are shaping up to be a welcome week of celebration (at the end of another year of world pandemic) — Miss Abbie’s Christmas Carol Walk promises to be sheer joy and fun.

Graduation assemblies for years 6 and 9 will be held in week 9 and also live-streamed. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for details.

Finally, Congratulations to our class of 2021. We have enjoyed the journey with you, we will miss you, and wish you all the best for fabulous futures. Enjoy reaching and celebrating this significant milestone.

Edible Kitchen Garden

Our students have been creating a small garden outside the EKG shed with plants provided by the Yankalilla Community Nursery. 

We have recently harvested garlic, onions and potatoes. 

2022 Citizen of the Year Awards

Nominations for the 2022 Citizen of the Year Awards for District Council of Yankalilla are live and we need your help to give our community’s best the recognition they deserve.

We’re looking for someone who makes a difference in our Council. Someone who contributes to our community and inspires those around them. They could be quiet achievers, community members or unknown heroes.

We are reaching out to community organisations and leaders, that can help us by identifying and nominating community members who are doing outstanding things. The Awards rely on members of the public to nominate, so we encourage you to consider putting someone forward in your networks for the 2022 Awards.

Your nominee could be recognised in one of our four categories:

• Citizen of the Year
• Young Citizen of the Year (16 to 30 years)
• Community Event of the Year
• Award for Active Citizenship

Stage 1 Kangaroo Island Tourism Camp

Camp reflection from some of our students:

For our year 11 tourism class, we were lucky enough to have to opportunity to travel across to Kangaroo Island for our end of year assignment. We drove around the island, gathering insights on the impact of the 2019-2020 bush fires and COVID-19.

We talked to people involved in the tourism industry and people helping places recover from fires. This included Megan from the KI Tourism Alliance, Vanessa from the KI Visitor Centre, Alison from Flinders Chase National Park and Gerd from the Ozone Aurora Hotel Kingscote.

We got to experience the many wonders of Kangaroo Island, such as the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, Hanson Bay and the Little Sahara sand dunes.

We stayed at the beautiful Vivonne Bay, where we got to spend our free time kayaking, fishing and walking along the beach.

The camp was a perfect blend of learning and fun and has left me very interested in the Tourism industry.

For the students last tourism assignment, the small class of 7, were required to write about the impacts of the 2020 bushfires and COVID-19 on Kangaroo Island tourism. We toured the island, Mr M being the guide, visiting amazing scenery, Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch and Flinders Chase National Park, and interviewed people, including Megan Harvie from the Kangaroo Island Tourism Alliance and Alison, a ranger at Flinders Chase, along the way to find out the true impact of COVID and the bushfires. In the mix of it all the students forgot they had an assignment to write. Whilst staying at beautiful Vivonne Bay, the students had fun kayaking on the Harriet River, hanging out together at the house and celebrating a student’s birthday, and surprisingly bumping into Mike Brazier at the Kingscote Hotel.  And believe it or not, most students completed their assignments as soon as we returned. Let’s just say, the students are a little bit keen for 2022’s Tourism Camps but not so much for the school work attached!

HASS Excursion

On the 10^th of November Ms Shute’s 7/8A and 7/8B classes went to Adelaide for A HASS excursion.

To start the day, they visited the Centre of Democracy to discover the people and ideas that have shaped democracy in South Australia.

Next, the students walked around the corner to the Migration Museum. This building was once part of Adelaide’s Destitute Asylum housing the poor, infirm, orphans and unmarried expectant mothers. Here students looked at the many exhibits which told the story of migration in South Australia.

In the afternoon we were lucky enough to be hosted by Leon Bignell at Parliament House. The students got to visit the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council Chamber as well as the Parliamentary Library where they go to see the menu for the Queen on her last visit. This included mock turtle soup – Yuck!!

Overall it was a great day of adventure and learning.

A special mention goes to Jade Barry and Indy Kimmins for their help on the day.

Colour, Culture and covid masks - our visit to the Art Galllery of SA

This term, we were lucky enough to receive a grant from BHP and the Art Gallery of SA (AGSA) to cover our transportation costs into this year's Tarnanthi exhibition.

31 students joined Bu Taylor, Phil and I on an amazing trip exploring the art of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Initially, we were welcomed to "The studio" by an ex-Yankalilla Area School teacher, Judith Sweetman, and given the opportunity to create our own artworks based on the works of Walmajarri artist, John Prince Siddon.  Using a template of a boab tree nut, we created a 3D artwork which we will hopefully install in the YAS library.  As you can see from the photographs, they are very colourful and definitely eye catching, just like the art of John Prince Siddon!

After a lunch break in the gallery grounds, we joined our guides Linda, Diane and Brian for an informative tour of the artworks.  There was an amazing array of art, ranging from paintings on animal skulls and skins and pieces of old cars, to artworks on bark and canvas depicting the life and Dreamings of the artists involved.  Photography and ceramics also featured.  It was incredible to see how the artwork changed from region to region, and I even spotted some Indonesian batik influence in some of the art from the Tiwi islands.

Thank you very much to our driver, Eric, Bu Taylor and Phil for their supervision help, Judith Sweetman and the staff at AGSA, as well as a huge thank you to BHP for allowing us this opportunity by providing the transport grant.

We look forward to seeing what work 2022 brings.

Award Winning Olive Oil!

Our Yankalilla Area School olive oil was entered into the Gawler Show recently.  

This is the other main Olive oil competition we have here in SA along with the Royal Show .

Our oil won first prize and we also received an encouragement award. 

New Health Service for children and young people - Women's and Children's Hospital

The Women’s and Children’s Health Network has introduced COVIDKIDS - a dedicated South Australian service for children and young people diagnosed with COVID-19.

Most children with COVID-19 will only experience a mild illness or will have no symptoms at all and can safely remain at home without the need for medical support.

For those who need extra care, the COVIDKIDS service will provide expert advice and support from specialist Infectious Diseases team at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

This mainly virtual service will allow children and young people to remain in isolation and avoid the stress that can sometimes be associated with coming to hospital.

The COVIDKIDS team will also arrange a face-to-face consultation at a dedicated space at the WCH, which has an entrance separate to the main hospital to reduce the risk of further infections.

For regional and rural children, the COVIDKIDS team will support and coordinate care through the appropriate local health services.

The service will commence from November 23.

Children's Art Prize

The Fleurieu Refugee Support Group (FRSG) is offering prizes for entries in a young person’s section of the 2022 Easter Arts and Crafts – Yankalilla event. The theme for these entries is UNITY.  Entries can be painting, collage, sculpture or digital images.  Prizes will be $50 in each age group.

Age groups (age on January 1^st 2022) will be:

• 5 years and under
• Ages 6-9
• Ages 10-13
• Ages 14-17

UNITY is about being joined as a whole, about friendship and connections. UNITY is needed in situations where other people need our help. It might be because of homelessness, bushfires, abuse or other life emergencies.

Can you draw or make a model or sculpture to show how UNITY might make life better for people in need or people who are suffering pain or loss? Imagine what you would do to help.

Application information will be available early next year. Now is the time to start thinking about your ideas or talking them over with friends, teachers and family. Think about a name for your work or a description that will help the judges.
