YAS News - End of Term 2, 2022
A note from the Principal
As we enter our last week of Term 2, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and cooperation as we have continued to navigate around COVID-19, the winter cold and what have been another busy but productive term for all.
Semester 2 has commenced and although students only have two weeks of Semester 2 before they enter the holiday break it is a good opportunity for them to get a head start in their new lessons.
This term we bid farewell to Fiona Adams, our Deputy Principal and wish her all the best for her retirement. Congratulations to Alex-Anne Hemphill who has won the Deputy Principal position until the end of the year. We also congratulate Emma Zimmerman who will be the Junior Leader, Primary Years for the remainder of the year.
Facebook and our newsletter are a reflection of the great work we have been involved in this term which is centred around our students and their positive learning opportunities. Please keep any eye on these forums throughout the term for important dates and happenings. We have a School Closure Day in Term 3 for the Royal Adelaide Show on Thursday 8th September, followed by a Student Free Day on Friday 9th September (Week 7).
Happy holidays, for those who get one, enjoy the break, stay safe and warm!
Christine
A note from our Pastoral Care Worker ...
If the last three years have taught us anything, it's that community and the support it can provide is a vital lifeline in times of need.(ABC )
The importance of connecting with others, looking out for our neighbour, enjoying the times when we catch-up with family & friends, looking forward to that holiday that’s been postponed is not to be underestimated. There is definitely a time in our life when we need to invest in self. If we don’t, we end up trying to drawer water from an empty well. A wise friend said recently ’give yourself permission to look after you’.
All these things give us something to hope for and increases our well-being.
Perhaps, BC (Before Covid) we may have taken these things/people for granted. It’s not until that choice is restricted, that we appreciate how valuable / necessary others are in our lives.
Another way to boost our well-being is to invest (volunteer) our time, energy, finances into community.
A very easy and practical way that you can invest into others is our annual 5CY Winter Donation day coming up on Friday 8th July. This is also Comfy Clothes Casual day.
Please send non perishable food to school instead of gold coins.
The team from 5CY (local church community support program) will ensure your donations go directly to local families in need.
Be generous and help others, and you will be helped. (Old proverb)
Have a happy and safe mid year break.
Keep well and warm!
Blessings, Wendy Lindsay (Pastoral Care Worker)
REMINDER = Term 3 commences - Monday July 25th. HAVE A GREAT BREAK!!

Readers Rap is on again! Today we gave out the books to some very excited students.
They'll be reading their books over the holidays, in preparation for the competition in Term 3.
6-7 Rotation Arts
In this Rotation we have been learning about Daruma dolls in Art and how they are used in Japanese Culture. We had to set a goal and create a daruma using papier mache, depicting our goal.
In our drama/dance lesson, we have just started exploring the elements and genre of dance. This week we are looking at line dancing. We learnt the Nutbush and will be creating our own dance next lesson.
7-8 Knockout Basketball
Mr Currie and Ms Shute took a boys group and a girls group to 7/8 Knockout Basketball at Morphett Vale Stadium.
The girls got into the Grand Final and lost by 1 point!
The boys finished 6th.
4-5A Spelling Words
Miss Abbie's literary group writing out their spelling words in chalk.
Nexus World Music Performances
In week 8 and week 9 we had visiting musicians from Nexus Arts come to our school and perform some world music.
Our first concert was Farhan, a Sufi Qawwali singer collaborating with Satomi, a Japanese percussionist and composer arranger. In week 9 Lazaro, a trumpet virtuoso in Cuban musical traditions introduced audiences to the rhythms and melodies of salsa music. Zhao used her guzheng, a Chinese harp, to explore culture & nature through music. Together these artists got us up and experimenting with musical styles.
These workshops were made available through the Internationalising Schools Grant.

Some of these pieces will be for sale in coming weeks so watch this space.
Robotics Program
Lions Club of Yankalilla and District is sponsoring a “beginners robotics” course. We have contracted Techspace Learning to run the course for us. Techspace Learning will provide two instructors and all materials needed to cover up to ten students for each training session. The sessions will be held at Yankalilla Showgrounds on Sunday afternoons, at the Agricultural Hall Supper Room. This B1 course will last for eight sessions during school term 3.
What is immediately on offer is an “introductory robotics” course, same place and time, same instructors, held to give an entrée to the B1 main course. Held in the school break before term 3 begins, there is a choice of one of three identical Sunday sessions. Parents are encouraged to attend, but should stay hands-off so that the student gets full hands-on benefit. An “introductory robotics” session gives everyone a chance to see how interested a student may be in the B1 course.
Techspace Learning normally charge $35 per session. Sponsorship has reduced the cost to parents for these Yankalilla sessions to only $10. Bookings are handled by Techspace Learning.
Lions will provide setting up and tea and coffee. There will be “Working With Children Check” certificate holders present to provide supervision.
Are you still wondering about what robotics is all about? Then try Googling “robotics Wikipedia”. Robotics is part of the STEM subjects, namely Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics. Electronics, Motors and Computer programming are involved. These sessions are an easy student-friendly introduction to an interesting landscape of career opportunities. Lions encourage students to give it a try.
