A Note from the Principal
The City Camp at West Beach Caravan Park last week was a blast! Special thanks to the team of staff involved in the organisation of the event, the students had a great time.
Last week we has transition visits, our new Reception students enjoyed a very successful day. Our Middle School transition has also commenced. We look forward to welcoming all of our new students to Yankalilla Area School.
On Monday, our Teachers undertook some PD which was dedicated to the EMS Teacher Toolkit. EMS is the new student data system that will replace EDSAS in schools. We will commence using EMS on Monday.
On Tuesday the Sammy D Foundation visited our school for an extremely informative and powerful forum.
This morning we celebrated and said farewell to our Year 12 students in a special Graduation Assembly in the gym. Today was an opportunity to reflect on their learning journey and celebrate their success. Thank you to Branko and the team for organising this significant event.
Tomorrow is the final Student Free Day for 2023. The day is focused on forward planning for 2023 as well as reflecting on the year.
Next week we welcome Christine back. I have thoroughly enjoyed the Acting Principal position for the past 6 weeks and thank everyone for their support.

Preparing for a Bushfire
Our school has detailed plans in place to keep your child safe on catastrophic fire days or in the event of a bushfire.
To help us keep your child as safe as possible, parents and caregivers can prepare for the fire danger season by:
- making a bushfire survival plan with your family
- providing us with your up-to-date contact details
- advising the school/preschool if your family’s personal bushfire survival plan will impact school attendance
- talking to your child about what will happen in a bushfire emergency
- liking the CFS, SES and SAPOL pages on Facebook
- adding the emergency information hotline 1800 000 279 to your contacts.
Parents and caregivers should also read and save the new bushfire and your child’s school or preschool brochure. This resource explains what our school will do on a catastrophic fire day or in the event of a fire.

Year 6/7 West Beach Camp
While the weather did not really favour our camp, that did not deter our Year 6/7 campers. These guys were out to fit the maximum amount of 'good time ' into the 3 days of camp. With many overcoming their fears in the tree climb, the sky was the limit. We took Rundle Mall by storm, buying up an arrangement of goods. The bus trip from the mall smelt like Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory and looked like an Asian market with students comparing purchases and the noise - so much excitement.
The West Beach Park turned on the entertainment with jumping pillows, basketball hoops, a games room and private dorms - who needs the pool!
I am not sure the poor man at the mini golf on Tuesday was ready to cook so many hotdogs, but between putts, we keep him on his game. Harbourtown saw the purchase of many a fashionista outfit, soon to be paraded at pizza night and finally Bounce, on our last day, knocked out the energizer batteries that must have been fuelling the last few days.
Big, big thank you to all involved, especially those called in at the last minute.

Biomes and Food Security Yr 8/9B
For the last term the students in 8/9B have been learning about Biomes and Food Security in HASS. As part of this unit of work, I invited Elesha from Foodbank to talk to the students via TEAMS to talk about food insecurity in South Australia and nation-wide. The facts and statistics that she discussed were very shocking and an eye-opener for most of us! It was great to see the students so engaged and asking Elesha questions throughout the presentation.
This unit of work also required the students to be part of the food insecurity solution so we planted seedlings at the farm. It was wonderful to see students being so hands-on at the farm planting seedlings such as chili, snow peas and tomatoes. A big THANK YOU to Graham for supporting us through this process!

Christmas at YAS
Christmas has arrived early at YAS, thanks to Year 2 student Queenie, who helped to decorate our beautiful Christmas tree in the Junior School library.
