YAS-News Term 1 Week 3 2023
A Note from The Principal
Hi everyone its hard to believe that week 3 is already over , where is this year going! School has begun with lots of positive teaching and learning. Each week I am privileged to visit as many classes as possible to share the teaching and learning, and am so impressed at the level of engagement from teachers , support workers and our students.
I would like to thank our families for supporting our uniform policy, as I am noticing most students present very smartly each day. Thanks also to those families that attended our open night and a big thankyou to our staff for your commitment to stay late. Our new mandated phone policy has been accepted by most students and thank you to all our families for supporting us to navigate through this process.
There will be an email coming to you all shortly with a link to be able to apply for free internet access at home for your children. This is a part of our commitment as an education department to strive for “excellence and equity” for every student. Our new Baristas have been trained this week and are getting ready to re-open our Cockatoo Café shortly, so watch our Facebook page for updates.
I do however need to conclude on a rather negative note. Like many other schools, we have a small pocket of students using vapes at school and we are endeavouring to educate all our students on the dangers regarding this practice. I have obtained legal advice today, that if we remove any type of illegal contraband from students, we are required to destroy them and no compensation can be expected. This is what will occur in the future.
Enjoy these sunny days before winter is upon us!
A Note From The Pastoral Care Worker
Yankalilla Area School Breakfast Club February 2023
Breakfast Club operates during school terms before lessons on a Monday and Friday morning. It provides a basic breakfast of fruit juice, hot milk chocolate drink and toast, to students from Rec to Year 12 who may not eat breakfast at home due to many and varied circumstances. Breakfast Club also provides an opportunity for students to connect with one another before the school day, and the many volunteers who faithfully provide the program each week.
The program is run by the local churches. Wendy Lindsay, the school PCW (chaplain) uses it as a valuable point of contact with students. Teachers have reported about the positive impact it has on students who take advantage of the meal. There is positive support for the program from the school’s Principal, Christine Bell.
Funding comes from the churches, District Council, Community Op Shop and milk donations from the Fleurieu Milk Company, 5CY Community Pantry. Drakes Supermarket donates loaves of fruit bread each week which gives the students some variety of choice.
The certificate Wendy received from the Yankalilla Council for their ongoing support of the breakfast club during 2023.

Rotation Drama Yr 7-9
In our Rotarion drama block we are learning about different types of staging. This week we read and acted parts from stories from Polynesia, Africa and Australia.
Our performance was in a round, which meant that the audience surrounded us..a real challenge to make sure that all the audience got to see our expressions and character movements.
Through stars and wishes reflection, we identified our voices were clear and strong (star), but we will work on making sure we know when it is our line!!( wish)
Graham's Farm Roadshow
Graham A, our farm manager has been bringing the farm to the quadrangle in the mornings this term. Our Students love spending time with the animals. Having pets like our friendly farm rabbits visit the children lifts their spirits, lesssens tension and even improves attendance at school.
Storytime in the YAS Library
Ms Williams entertained our Reception-Year 1 students with a fabulous picture book this week. The library was full of laughter as we turned the pages of the 'The Crayons Trick Or Treat' by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers.
