YAS-News Term 2 Week 2 2023
A note from The Principal
Welcome to Term 2! Although the school holidays may seem like a distant memory for some, I do hope you all managed some time to relax, reenergise and do what makes you happy. What a couple of weeks Term 2 has produced already!
Over the school holidays we have had the ramps replaced into the Beach House and Performing Arts. The rails will be finished in the next week and they look great. This term we will see a beautiful new shade structure in between middle school and middle primary areas which will give protection during winter and become and outdoor seating and learning area.
Our Leadership team have commenced and continue to have positive conversations in prioritising our writing goal – for all students to demonstrate at least 12 months growth in writing per year for the next three years. Writing Moderation will be the focus during our early closure Monday staff PD sessions as well as reviewing our School Improvement Plan.
Recently I accompanied our Senior Student Leaders to the State Youth Leadership Conference. The conference was to inspire, strengthen and empower our future leaders and show them the importance of setting goals and achieving them. On Monday the students presented an informative information session about what they had learnt and how our teachers could support all student in achieving their goals.
Yesterday was all about our mums. The Cockatoo Café invited students to bring their mum in for a coffee morning first thing and we had our annual Mother’s Day stall which was a huge success. Our SRC students managed the stall – thank you Blair, Christine and Brodie.
On Tuesday our SAPSASA basketball teams played at the Morphett Vale Stadium. Both teams were super competitive, with the boys moving up to division 1 this year and competing against some much larger schools. The girls competed really well with only 6 players for the day.
`This week our senior years Outdoor Ed students have been in Robe, they return this afternoon and I look forward to hearing all about their adventures.
National Volunteer Week takes place next week from 15th – 21st May. Our volunteers contribute to the education sector in many ways, from reading in class to helping on excursions. We will be celebrating the significant contribution of our volunteers on Thursday with a luncheon.
How lovely it is walking around the school today seeing blue for “Do it for Dolly” fundraiser day.
We have a Student Free Day on Friday 26th May (Week 4). All staff will be participating in Day 2 of Restorative Practices training.
Keep warm!

Student Free Day Friday 26th May
A Note from the Pastoral Care Worker
Hands up if you have ever had a 'difficult day'? You know those days, when the bills are piling up, the car breaks down, the children aren't listening, or perhaps you lost your keys. Sometimes we don't need someone to 'fix' the problem we just need a good listening ear or a good friend (a 'Piglet') to simply 'be' with us.
If you ever need a listening ear, please feel free to give me a call at school. I care about you, and I'm here to support you...
I received this from a valued colleague and friend. It reminded me that we ALL need a 'Piglet' in our lives.
"Today was a Difficult Day," said Pooh. There was a pause.
"Do you want to talk about it?" asked Piglet.
"No," said Pooh after a bit. "No, I don't think I do."
"That's okay," said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend.
"What are you doing?" asked Pooh.
"Nothing, really," said Piglet. "Only, I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don't feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either.
"But goodness," continued Piglet, "Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you've got someone there for you. And I'll always be here for you, Pooh."
And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs...he thought that his best friend had never been more right."

DO IT FOR DOLLY DAY
Friday the 12th of May (Week 2) is Do it for Dolly Day! For those of you who don't know who Dolly is, she is a beautiful teenage girl who took her own life at the age of 14 in 2018 after relentless bullying.
Dolly's parents created a foundation called 'Dolly's Dream' to both honour their daughter and promote awareness and initiatives around bullying. Do it For Dolly Day is a day where thousands of Australian people get together, remember Dolly and raise money and awareness for anti-bullying initiatives in Australia for young people.
This year, the Middle Years SRC will be hosting a Do it For Dolly Day at YAS! On Friday the 12th of May, we are encouraging all our students to wear something blue to represent Dolly's favourite colour, spread kindness and donate a gold coin towards the foundation.
I encourage everyone to visit the 'Do it For Dolly' website to read information about the day and what is being done t0 help combat bullying.
Thanks for your support with this!

Mother's Day Celebrations
On Thursday our SRC Students held the Annual Mother's Day Stall. Thank you to all the parents and staff for making and donating gifts to make this event so successful.
WE WOULD LIKE TO WISH ALL THE MUMS A VERY HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY
Thank you to all the Mums who called into Cockatoo Cafe today with their children for a hot drink and participate in the special activities arranged for them.
THE MINECRAFT RAINBOW
A rainbow of Minecraft books has added a splash of colour in the Primary Library this week. Our lucky Year 4 student, Kohl R, was first in line to reserve his favourite Minecraft guide.

7/8 SAPSASA Basketball
On Tuesday the Boys and Girls SAPSASA Basketball teams set off to play Basketball Vale Stadium.
Both teams were super competitive, with the boys moving up to division 1 this year and competing against some much larger schools. The girls competed really well with only 6 players for the day.
Massive thanks to all of the parents that offered/volunteered to drive students on the day - Amanda Alexander, Katie Wenham, Angela Kuschel, Cath Thorn, Luke Dunbar, Andrew Gray, Skye Rahaley, Melissa Smithson & Robert Davis. Also thanks to Candace Turner for taking the reigns at the last minute as the coach of the girls team.
Internationalising Schools Program
This week we completed the second mural in our UN Sustainable Development Goals collection. This mural was inspired by Goal 15 Life on Land. Conservation and protection of diversity and ecosystems is a part of the goal, along with sustainability. This mural depicts life on land around Makassar in Sulawesi, Indonesia and particularly around our sister school. Keyla, a student from SMPN 6 Makassar, had drawn some of the creatures found around the local area and also some of the habitats. These images were shared with our Year 9 students, Lilly, Chayse and Ebony who worked with Bu Ellin to design and create the mural pictured. Captured in the mural is a well-known local waterfall, the tarsier, a small nocturnal creature which is regarded as critically endangered, local butterflies which Makassar is famous for and the anoa, which is also endangered. This is an example one of the cross-cultural activities that have been occurring since we connected with Makassar in 2021. We are looking forward to completing the third mural in the series, which will reflect another UN Sustainable Development goal that is important to both our sites.
