YAS News-Week 2 Term 8 2022
A Note from the Principal
Brrrrr … winter is most certainly here! As we approach the end of Week 8, the wet weather has not deterred us from everything that is happening at school this week.
This week our Year 9’s have been on camp and updates from staff and photos that have been sent through, they are certainly enjoying themselves.
This term we have been planning for our External School Review which took place on Monday and Tuesday. Two review officers conducted class visits, student / teacher / ATSI / Governing Council and parent forums, discussions with the Leadership team and examination of an extensive range of school documentation used to develop and embed our School Improvement Plan across our site. Thank you to the parents who participated, I will share the final report when it comes through.
Our community meeting, “Escape the Vape” held on Wednesday evening at the Yankalilla Football Clubrooms attracted around 60 community members, business, students and families. It was extremely successful and it was good to see so many people that have a vested interest in curbing vaping in our community. We certainly intend on implementing some of the suggestions that came out of the meeting.
Refugee Week is this week and staff have held activities throughout the week. We have a sausage sizzle fundraiser today at recess time with funds going to the Southern Fleurieu Refugee Group.
Upcoming events include Beats and Pieces, R-5 Disco, 3 – 5 swimming and our R-12 Assembly.
Reminder = Cockatoo Café is open to the community on Thursday’s at recess time. Please feel free to come and have a coffee and snack prepared by our baristas!
Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for daily updates and lots of photos. Our newsletter is another form of communication to our community and we take note of all feedback regarding how we can improve. As well as the newsletter being available on digital devices, there will be printed copies at the front office for people who prefer paper reading.
Keep warm and stay safe on the roads.

A Note from the Pastoral Care Worker
The journey of grieving is such a personal experience. There are no right or wrong ways. It is a moment by moment, individual walk. Along the journey we may experience anger, denial, depression, guilt and many other emotions that may come in waves. We may need ‘alone’ time or want the hug and conversation of trusted loved ones.
As caring humans, we can sometimes want to help ‘fix’ the situation, when we know of course there is no fix, only time to adjust to the ‘new normal’.
Here are a few words you may like to share if and when the time is right.
Would it be ok if I just sat here with you? We don’t need to say anything. I just want you to know I’m here.
However you’re feeling right now is completely ok. I’m here for it.
What you’re going through right now isn’t easy. Please know that I’m here to listen if you ever want to share anything.
I’m so sorry. Truly.
I just wanted to say I’m thinking of you today. My heart is with you
Did you want to get out of the house, go for a drive.
I’d like to treat you/make you dinner. What would you like?
Is there anything I can help with right now.
If I had the words right now, I would say them. But I don’t. Can I just be here with you?
Please know that if you or someone you know would like to chat, let school know and I will be in touch.

Year 5-6 Indonesian
In our past couple of lessons we have been working on creating photostory comic texts using the Comic book app on the iPads. Many of our SMART goals we wrote this term revolved around being about to introduce and describe our friends and classmates in Indonesian, and many of us did that this week! Even with some glitches with the old iPad 2 ( from 2012 so older than most of us!) we managed to work together in groups to create a text sharing information about our classmates.
Year 4/5 Indonesian
We have been learning about Friendship and how to describe our friends and classmates. Our task in the past few lessons has been to create a game to help us learn the vocabulary and questions from our story text.
We had to make sure we included the vocabulary on the success criteria. Once completed, our games were peer accessed against the criteria and we will be trying them out to see if they work. We had a wide range of board game designs!
Installation Art
Today students worked collaboratively to finish a piece of installation art called "To do".
Thank you to the classes and teachers that contributed their ideas to the piece, answering the question "What do you want to do?".
Each yellow post it note contains a response from YAS students. Some are quite humorous, and some are inspirational.
The artwork will be on display for a short time in the administration area.
