YAS-News Term 3 Week 6 2023
A Note from the Principal
On Wednesday we celebrated all that is great about our Dads, grandfathers, uncles, and all father figures as they joined us for a morning of connection and happiness. To kick off the day of celebration, we hosted a delightful Father's Day breakfast in the school quadrangle. It was a time for families to come together, share stories read books, and enjoy a delicious bacon and egg sandwich.
This week we honoured our dedicated Student Support Officers who tirelessly work behind the scenes to ensure the well-being and success of our students. Their unwavering commitment to providing guidance, assistance, and a listening ear has made a significant difference in the lives of our students. Whether offering academic support, fostering a safe and inclusive environment, or simply being a source of comfort, their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Their dedication is a driving force in shaping a positive and nurturing school experience for all. We thanked them for their invaluable contributions to our school community with a dedicated morning tea and many cards from our students.
Next Wednesday we are hosting the Minister for Education, Hon Blair Boyer MP and his parliamentary colleague, Leon Bignell MP. The Minister's visit included the ribbon cutting of our new outdoor shade area, engaging classroom visits, and insightful discussions with teachers and students alike. The Minister’s has a genuine interest in our school's progress and commitment to quality education, and we look forward to showcasing the best Yankalilla Area School has to offer.
Please remember, our doors are always open for our families. We value the partnership between our school and our families, and we're here to support your child's growth and success in every way we can. If you have any questions, suggestions, or would like to volunteer, don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or our front office or stop for a chat with me at the front of school each morning.

A Note from The Pastoral Care Worker
Father’s Day means many things for different men, and can come with lots of mixed feelings depending on the circumstances. Love, connection, and caring may be obvious, but sometimes, Father’s Day can also come with grief, loss and regret.
Father’s Day should be a day of celebrating the most important and significant relationships in men’s lives. This could be with their Dad, their own children, step children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren or close family friends.
Whether a Dad gets served pancakes or bacon and eggs for breakfast, a mixed grill for lunch or dinner at the Pub, the important thing is CONNECTION.
And remember the gift you buy/receive – may be a handmade gift or card, another stubby holder, or an expensive set of golf clubs. Whatever the gift, remember the real meaning behind Father's Day – don’t lose sight of the purpose of the day - make it a truly family day and one to be treasured.
“Dads – let me encourage you to think of how you would like your children to describe you to others – “my dad is playful, fun, a good listener, caring, thoughtful” or “my dad is never home, he’s grumpy, seems like he doesn’t even care”.
This Father’s Day, I truly hope it is a day of making happy, positive memories with your loved ones.
Have a great day!
Blessings, Wendy Lindsay (Pastoral Care Worker)
Year 3/4 A Yankalilla Council Excursion
On Monday the 28th of August 3/4A walked to the Yankalilla Council. We had the pleasure of meeting Nathan Cunningham – CEO Ross Whitfield – Director Assets & Environment, Darryl Houston – Mayor, Liz Soper – Communications, Executive Administration Officer (Minutes secretary at Council Meetings) and Tia Russell – Community & Youth Projects. We held a mock council meeting where our students got to come up with ideas of what we would like to see throughout our local community.
It was great to see our students debate and express their views on things that are important to them.
Here are some remarks from the students about our day
- It was so cool, we even got to sit in the Mayor’s swingy chair
- I thought it was going to be like a jail, but it is nice.
- It was big and we got to meet the people that make decisions in our town
- It was really fancy and they had nice toilets
- It was fun doing a pretend meeting, I hope the Mayor brings an outdoor cinema to Yankalilla.

Fathers Day Stall
The YAS Fathers Day stall has been a huge success today.
A big 'thank you' to everyone who donated & wrapped gifts and to our wonderful students and volunteers who ran the stall.
Pictured are our satisfied customers from 2-3A showcasing gifts for their Dads and Grandads.
Girls Football Crow's Cup
This group of talemted footballers represented Yankalilla Area School at The Crow's Cup held at Encounter Bay. They played 4 matches and won all their games to take out 1st place.
7-8 Bahasa Indonesia
In the 7-8 classes we are talking about foods. Our text discusses both Indonesian foods and some popular foods we have all eaten or tried. Food is a great way to share culture and everyone has some opinion or experience with many food types.
This week some of the students did some "fake cooking" making some Indonesian krupuk.
Krupuk is usually cooked in oil, but we cooked ours in the microwave, watching them pop up in 30 seconds!
Someone then had the great idea to use kecap manis as a dipping sauce, adding to the taste of the krupuk.
They were given the thumbs up by the majority of the group. Enak sekali!
International Studies
This semester our focus is sport. Our text discusses going to a bowling centre with friends and competing against one another.
Sport is something that everyone has experiences with; through playing, watching or discussing likes and dislikes.
In South East Asia, Sepak takraw is a popular sport. We learnt that you can only move the ball using your feet, knee, chest or head. It can not touch your arms.
We were able to watch some rallies between teams at elite level and then headed out to give it a go ourselves.
The longest rally we achieved was 8....susah sekali!
Year 10 Art
Currently in art we are looking at lino printmaking. A good print has texture, fine and thick lines for variety and uses as much of the block as possible. One of our tasks was to create a print that represented ourselves. We had flags, beach scenes and also scorpions and snakes!
Book Week Celebrations
Book Week celebrations last Thursday were a huge success.
Zen and Amber were both exceptional leaders on stage and the whole 5-6A class did a great job of hosting the parade and activities on the day.
The colourful photos of our students are now on display in the YAS foyer to enjoy.
