YAS-News Term 1 Week 7 2024
A note from the Principal
Hello everyone,
I hope you all stayed cool over the weekend, what a scorcher it was! Not the most ideal time to have your active grandson around, who loves being outdoors.
Our teachers have planned an engaging week of learning, here are some key highlights:
Tuesday: Encounter Youth & Empower Education will present a Vaping Program for students in Years 7-12. We've obtained a $3,500 grant to offer this educational session at no cost to the students.
Wednesday: The Defence Force Presentation will explore various career paths for senior students, offering valuable insights for informed decision-making. A big thank you to Ms. McEvoy for organizing this. Also, our popular recess activity "World of Music" will take place, allowing students to enjoy the latest hits and timeless classics with fellow music enthusiasts. This initiative by Bu Ellen aims to unite students through music, creating a celebration of sound and movement.
Friday: I will be accompanying Heidi on a trip to Her Majesty's Theatre, where students from Years 6, 8, and 9 will be treated to a circus dance performance titled "Time Machine."
The NAPLAN assessments for students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 will start on Tuesday until March 22. These assessments provide essential information for students, parents, teachers, and principals, helping to improve student achievement.
I encourage you to schedule a Student-led interview. These meetings empower your children to showcase their progress, strengths, and goals, fostering confidence, ownership, and self-reflection in their learning journey. More details can be found in the newsletter.
Remember to mark Harmony Day on Wednesday, March 20 in your calendar. Students can wear orange and take part in the provided activities to celebrate the valuable contributions people from diverse cultures make to society.
Another busy week to enjoy.

World of Music
On Wednesdays at recess, students take to the stage in the quad to dance to the week's themed music. Others prefer to sit and enjoy the music or watch some of our inventive dancers.
The experience has been made even better with the purchase, through our Internationalising Schools grant, of a JBL party box, complete with synchronised disco lights! We look forward to hearing from students and the school community with ideas for weekly music themes or songs suggestions.
This week's theme is "Nature", with the play list including songs like "Flowers" and “Green, Green Grass". Should be a lot of fun seeing the dance moves!
Next week, as part of Harmony Week celebrations, we will play songs that are happy and harmonious. If you know of a song with orange in the title, please let us know!

Senior Years
The senior school at Yankalilla Area School are committed to creating an environment where each student is welcomed and included. We aim to develop the ‘whole person’ and are focused on fostering positive relationships through Restorative Practices. This is enhanced through our Pastoral Care program, which enables our staff to build further on knowing each individual student and how they learn best. This Semester, Students in year 10 and 11 are working towards 10 SACE credits in support of their SACE journey through the Pastoral Care program. Our senior students will be exploring their career options, analysing & maintaining academic success and building on their Wellbeing & understanding of safe practices.
Thank you to the Australian Defence Force (ADF) for visiting Yankalilla Area School today. Students across Year 9-12 found the session to be very informative and valuable.
Did you know….almost every trade and profession is represented in the Navy, Army and Air Force.
