YAS Newsletter Term 2 Week 2 2024
From the Principal's Desk
Dear families
As I reflect on the start to term 2 at YAS, I am pleased to say that the start back has been a positive one. Students have settled back into the school routine with ease and our Primary students have adapted well to having a new Indonesian teacher (weeks 1-5), Mr Olsder who has quickly built positive relationships with students. I feel very fortunate to have already spent six months at the school before taking on the role of Principal, which has ensured a smooth transition for both students and staff.
As we embark on this new phase of the academic year, I am pleased to share with you some of our key priorities for Term 2 which reflect our collective vision for excellence and growth:
- Academic Excellence: Our foremost commitment is to provide each and every student with the tools, resources, and support necessary to thrive. Through engaging lessons, personalised learning experiences, and targeted interventions, we are dedicated to nurturing the intellectual curiosity and academic achievement of every student.
- Holistic Development: At YAS we recognize the importance of nurturing the whole child. In addition to academic pursuits, we are committed to fostering the social, emotional, and physical well-being of our students. This includes promoting a culture of inclusivity and respect, and supporting students' mental health and wellness.
- Community Engagement: A strong sense of community is at the heart of everything we do. In Term 2, we will continue to cultivate partnerships with parents, guardians, and the wider community to create a supportive and enriching educational environment for all. Through open communication, collaboration, and active participation, we aim to strengthen the bonds that unite us as a school community.
- Technological Advancement: Improving our communication processes are a key priority for us moving forward and we will be working hard behind the scenes to get ready for our Daymap Learner Management System to go live to parents in semester 2. More information will be provided over the coming weeks.
Over the last 6 months staff and parents/grandparents who attended Student Led Interviews and the AGM have provided valuable feedback to help shape our future strategic directions. I am delighted to share these with you below (see infographics). Is there anything we missed? If you have any ideas or further contributions, please share them with us by emailing dl.0766.info@schools.sa.edu.au or send us a message through our Facebook page.

Years 4,5 & 6 Visit the Yankalilla Museum
Students in years 4, 5, and 6 had a captivating visit to the local Yankalilla Museum yesterday as part of “ May History Month”. They witnessed hay baling and rope making demonstrations using historical machinery. The blacksmith forge was in operation, along with displays of knitting, weaving, and wool spinning. They observed the grand opening of the Dairy & Sheep display shed too.
The children engaged with the interactive exhibit themed "A Cure For All Ills," exploring medicines and remedies used in the past. Their favorite parts included the old-time shops and the church, while some were determined to master the tilts and walk confidently on them.
'Lest we Forget' - Year 7/8A and 7/8B
As part of HASS learning during Week 1, we had some lengthy discussions and watched some informative short videos about ANZAC Day. I was really impressed to hear that many of our students paid respect to those that served in war at a dawn service on the 25th of April.
Did you know that the battle of Gallipoli lasted approximately 8 months, or that approximately 8,000 Australian troops died in the battle?
To commemorate ANZAC Day, we designed and created ANZAC silhouettes to display in our classrooms. As you can see, they look absolutely AMAZING!!
We are and always will be thankful for the people that risked their own lives to protect ours. We will never forget them!
