YAS Newsletter T2 Week 10 2024
From The Principal's Desk
Dear Families
As we approach the end of another productive term at YAS, I am pleased to share
some key highlights and updates from our school community.
Advancing Our School Vision and Strategic Directions
Central to our mission at YAS is the ongoing commitment to realising our school vision
and strategic directions. This term has seen significant progress in aligning our efforts to provide the
best possible educational experience for every student. This term, we have made significant strides in
aligning our efforts with our school vision and strategic directions. Through collaborative efforts and
dedicated teamwork from our staff, we continue to build a foundation that ensures all students thrive
academically, socially, and emotionally.
Welcoming Back our Deputy Principal
I would like to extend a warm welcome back to Deputy Principal Alex-Anne Dawe who returns to us
from taking maternity leave. Her return brings valuable experience and leadership to our team, and
we look forward to her continued contributions to the school’s progress and success.
Campus Refurbishments and Enhancements
We have spent the term planning for (and starting) cosmetic refurbishments across our campus,
including painting updates in the Junior Primary Area, more nature play elements to our quadrangle
area and an upgrade to our Safe Play Area. These improvements will enhance our learning
environment, encourage student development and engagement. I would like to thank members of our
Governing Council Grounds Committee who have provided valuable feedback and perspectives on
potential improvements.
Excursions, Camps, and Enriching Learning Experiences
Throughout the term, our students have had the opportunity to engage in a variety of enriching
learning experiences, including educational excursions, camps and sporting events. These
experiences have provided valuable learning opportunities outside the classroom, fostering personal
development and teamwork among our students.
Wishing You a Happy and Safe Holiday
As we prepare to break for the holidays, I wish all our families a happy, safe (and warm) break. We look
forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed for another productive term ahead.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in our shared mission to provide the best
educational experience for our students. Together, we are building a community where every student
can thrive.
Warm regards,
Haley Przibilla

Pastoral Care Worker Update
It has been a busy couple of weeks.
PARENT COFFEE MORNINGS
I have thoroughly enjoyed connecting with a few parents over coffee. This is a very casual time when we get to share suggestions, ask questions and swap ideas.
It was suggested we meet on Fridays between 9am -10am in weeks 2,4,6,8,10.
Please contact me at school for more details.
GOVERNING COUNCIL
The YAS Governing Council Meetings are a collective mix of ideas and discussions. Parents, staff and community members gather together, each bringing their unique perspectives and insights to the table. Whether it’s planning upcoming events, addressing concerns, or brainstorming new initiatives, these meetings are a testament to the collaborative spirit that drives our school forward.
FLO STUDENTS
It gave me great pleasure to witness some of our FLO students pass on nearly 70 containers of soup plus delicious dampers to 5CY. These are going out to those in our community that need that bit extra support, especially this time of year.
5CY is currently assisting around 40 families/individuals in the Yankalilla District.
Thankyou FLO!
QUIZ NIGHT
A team of staff represented YAS at the recent Club Fleurieu Quiz Night.
We may need to brush up on our general trivia knowledge, but it was a fun way to spend an evening with our work buddies.
Big thanks to all those who attended and to Club Fleurieu for their support.
5CY (5 Churches of Yankalilla) COMMUNITY PANTRY
Comfy clothes day is coming up!
Friday 5th July!
This has now become a tradition at the end of term 2. I invite everyone to join in by wearing your warm, comfy clothes and instead of a gold coin donation, could I ask you to send in donations of non-perishable food to donate to our local community service, the 5CY Community Pantry. Thankyou!

Community Activity – Chatting with Tradies
For my Community Activity in Workplace Practices, I chose to host a workshop for students in years 10-12 interested in pursuing trades. I invited several local trades people to chat to the students. We prepared some questions for them to think about a head of time.
- What was involved in getting an apprenticeship?
- What are the biggest challenges of the job?
- What advice would you give students looking for a career as a tradie?
The session was held on Thursday the 13th of June at 2pm. Four tradies joined us: Donovan Steer (carpenter, building company), Matt James (plumber), Andrew Cole (electrician) and Joshua Shute (electrician). Approximately 20 students attended the session and were very engaged by what the tradies had to say. Some key advice they gave us:
- Be prepared to work hard
- Find ways to forget about work and de-stress – exercise, gym etc
- Make it happen - get hands-on experience
- A positive work ethic is key
- If you find a job doing what you love, it is not like work!!
I would really like to thank the tradesmen for taking time out of their busy day to speak to us. I would also like to thank Ms Braithwaite and Ms Joshua for providing a lovely afternoon tea. It was a great afternoon. Chatting with tradies could be even bigger and better next year.

Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser
This week on Friday 14th June, the year 12’s hosted a sausage sizzle fundraiser to raise money for the formal that is taking place later in the year. Although the weather was miserable, lots of eager primary students lined up for a sausage in bread and to guess how many lollies were in the jar.
We had a successful day selling sausages, particularly during the first break. Despite that, we still have plenty left in the freezer for another sausage sizzle next term.
Thank you to everyone who supported the fundraiser and came along to buy a sausage. Congratulations to Willem from 6A and Miah from Reception A for making the closest guess of 800 lollies in the “Guess the Lollies in the Jar’ competition.
There were in fact 801 lollies in the jar! The prize was split between the two students who were very happy with their share of lollies!
Thank you to all the year 12’s who helped run the sausage sizzle on the day. A Bigger thank you to Mr McEvoy, Mrs McEvoy, Mr Shute, Ms Shute and Ms Joshua for volunteering their time to help out help out and supervise. Without them we wouldn’t have been able to raise $143.00 for the formal.
We hope to see you all next term at the next sausage sizzle. Let’s hope the weather is on our side!

Make Bullying History Presentation: Empowering Our Students to Combat Bullying
As part of our commitment to fostering a supportive and understanding school community, students in Years 10 and 11 recently participated in a powerful presentation aimed at empowering schools to effectively combat bullying.
The engaging and thought-provoking session was presented by Brett Murray, a respected advocate for children and anti-bullying, who was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2024 for his outstanding services in this field. Mr. Murray's extensive experience and dedication brought a wealth of knowledge and inspiration to our students.
This session not only educated our students on the seriousness of bullying but also equipped them with practical skills and strategies to create a more inclusive and supportive school culture. By understanding and addressing the root causes of bullying, our students are now better prepared to contribute to a safe and nurturing learning environment.
International Students Visit
When Hallet Cove's International students visited
Yankalilla Area School, they brought more than just stories
from overseas—they shared vibrant cultures, added final touches to a collaborative mural, cuddled
adorable joeys, and found themselves in a lively chase with the school's friendly sheep.
At recess time, our WOM (World Of Music) dancers and singers set the stage for an unforgettable day,
captivating the international students with their enthusiastic performances before the Year 6-Year 10
hosts from Yankalilla Area School escorted the Hallet Cove students to various classrooms. There, they
engaged in entertaining exchanges about their home countries, with one class even learning some
karate moves, helping to foster intercultural understanding and mutual respect.
Ms Bella's 5/6 class invited their international guests to join them in a game of basketball. The German
students came back impressed with the skills of the players and more than a little puffed!
The excitement continued with a visit to the farm, where Graham and Chloe shared fascinating insights
into animal care and aquaculture. In the sheep yard, the students were hilariously pursued by handreared sheep eagerly searching for food. They also had the heartwarming experience of cuddling joeys,
Tim and Tam, while learning about the lifelong commitment of caring for orphaned kangaroos due to
South Australia's no-release policy from Sharyn Braithwaite
As lunchtime rolled around, Graham and the FLO/coastal students had fired up the BBQ, treating
everyone to delicious beef steaks and a variety of sausages. The Hallet Cove students eagerly sampled
the local fare, enjoying the flavours and camaraderie. Adding to the festive atmosphere, one of the
Hallet Cove students supplied lively music, making the meal even more enjoyable.
The day concluded with a deeper sense of global citizenship as students from different corners of the
world connected over shared experiences and intercultural exchanges. The success of this visit has
again sparked commitment for future collaborations, with both schools looking forward to more
opportunities to learn from one another and strengthen their international connections.

Yabby Farm Update
Things are really starting to happen in the aquaculture/aquaponics space at YAS. In the last month, we have acquired some rehomed Murray Cod! The fish will support our aquaponics system with nutrient rich water. The Year 7 students have completed planting seedlings in the aquaponics greenhouse grow bed. The maintenance of these seedlings will be crucial for a harvest later in the year. Progress is being made on the yabby farm, with special thanks to Chris & Mel Andrews for their generous donation supporting the project and the students' education. A big thank you to Graham for his groundwork and advice behind the scenes. Stay tuned for more updates!
